The experience
Your day starts with a 4.5-hour transfer: car pickup, then bus to the Omalos trailhead, then ferry to the gorge entrance. The hike itself takes 9.5 hours, including lunch and a swim in the water at the base. Your guide is a local who grew up at Agia Roumeli and has hiked these mountains since childhood. His father's house sits inside the gorge now, used as a first-aid station by the national park. He walks with you the whole way and points out the rare birds, cave systems, narrow rock passages and the plants and herbs that grow only here. He also talks about the life of the place: the traditions, the local food, the families who lived in the gorge before it became protected land.
The gorge itself is a long descent through White Mountains terrain, moving from high altitude down to sea level where you finish at Agia Roumeli. You bring a hiking stick (included) and wear shoes that grip on stone. The path has sections that are steep and narrow, and the full day is physically demanding: you need at least a moderate level of fitness and healthy knees and cardiovascular health to complete it. Children can join from age 8 onward. Lunch and a swim break happen partway through, and the ferry at the end takes you back along the coast.
What’s included
- Private transportation from your accommodation.
- hiking stick.
- live guide in English throughout the hike.
- ferry boat transfer at the end of the gorge.

What is Samaria Gorge actually like to walk through?
Samaria Gorge is a long descent through the White Mountains that narrows into passages between high rock walls, with caves, rare bird species and unusual stone formations along the way. The path drops from high altitude to sea level over the course of the hike, and sections are steep and rocky underfoot.
How much of the day is spent actually hiking versus traveling to and from the gorge?

What does the guide actually explain while you're hiking?
The guide talks about the history and habitation of the gorge, the plants and herbs that grow there, the rare animals and birds, local traditions and cuisine, and the life of the people who lived in the gorge before it became a national park. He grew up in Agia Roumeli and has hiked these mountains since childhood, so he speaks from direct knowledge of the place.
