The experience
The hike starts at your hotel with pickup and transfer to the gorge entrance. From there, you follow the river upstream through the Sitia Geopark, a landscape that holds water even during Crete's driest months. The shade from the gorge walls keeps temperatures manageable on hot days, and the path itself is built for walkers: small wooden bridges cross the stream, and old water mills mark the route. The 5-kilometer walk takes about 7 hours total, including time to rest and take in the stops along the way.
The river leads you past small ponds and waterfalls on its way to the main 20-meter waterfall at Richtis. Endemic plants, flowers and trees line the banks, species found nowhere else, and if you're quiet, you may spot local animals. The viewpoints are scattered through the gorge, each one a place to pause and look back at where you've come from. Your guide carries a first aid kit and knows the terrain. They speak English and can answer questions about what you're seeing.
The tour ends with a transfer back to your hotel. High-quality photos from the day are included, along with bottled water and a snack to refuel on the hike. An entrance fee of €5 applies for visitors over 15 years old and is paid separately at the gate.
