Swim at two of Crete's most remote water spots in one day

A private full-day tour of Crete takes you to the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where you walk to natural waterfalls and can jump into cold mountain pools, then south to Preveli Beach to swim in the palm-fringed lagoon where a river meets the sea. The day ends with lunch at a seaside village restaurant. An English-speaking driver guides the route. Hotel pickup and water are included.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore waterfalls, beach, and seaside village

  • Coffee stop with amazing views
  • Walk to Kourtaliotiko waterfalls
  • Optional swim in cold waterfall water
  • Visit Preveli palm forest and beach
  • Swim in crystal clear sea waters
  • Lunch by the sea in village

The experience

The tour starts with a coffee stop, then drives 45 minutes to the Kourtaliotiko Gorge. A short 10-minute walk brings you to the waterfalls themselves. You can wade in or jump if you want, though the water stays cold year-round. The gorge's canyon walls frame the whole approach, and the walk is straightforward enough that most travelers handle it without strain.

From there you head south to Preveli Beach, where a river lined with palm trees flows into the Libyan Sea. The palms are real (not a common sight on Crete's coast), and the lagoon where freshwater meets salt water is the main draw. You swim here before heading to lunch at a village restaurant right on the water, where the food is local and the pace is slow.

Your driver speaks English and handles all navigation. The vehicle is air-conditioned and has onboard Wi-Fi. Lunch is optional, so you can skip it or eat light. If the palm forest doesn't appeal, you can ask to visit Plakias beach instead. The driver will work with your preference on the day.

What’s included

  • Hotel pickup and private air-conditioned transportation with onboard Wi-Fi.
  • English-speaking driver guide for the full day.
  • water and coffee.
  • seaside lunch at a village restaurant (optional, paid separately).

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

How long is the walk to the Kourtaliotiko waterfalls?

The walk from the parking area to the waterfalls takes around 10 minutes. It's a straightforward path, though you'll want sturdy shoes and should be comfortable on uneven ground.

Can I swim at both the gorge and Preveli Beach?

Yes. The water at Kourtaliotiko is cold mountain water fed by springs, while Preveli's lagoon is warmer where the river meets the sea. Both are swimmable, and you choose whether to jump in at either spot.

What's included in the price?

The tour includes hotel pickup, private transportation, an English-speaking driver guide, water, and coffee. Lunch at the seaside village is optional and paid separately. Entrance fees at the gorge are also separate.

Is this tour suitable for families with young children?

Infants and small children can come (strollers are accommodated in the minibus), but the 10-minute walk to the waterfalls and the overall day length (8 to 9 hours) work best for kids who can manage a bit of walking and sitting in a vehicle.

What happens if I don't want to visit the palm forest at Preveli?

You can visit Plakias and one of its nearby beaches instead. Let your guide know on the day, and the itinerary can shift to suit your preference.
