Wade and hike through a river gorge, then walk out onto a palm-fringed beach

River trekking on Crete takes you into Kourtaliotiko Gorge for a swim at the waterfall, then down the riverbed itself to Preveli Beach, a palm-forested shore on the south coast. The guide leads a small group through water and over dry paths, with lunch and bottled water provided; the experience runs nearly six hours and includes pickup from your hotel.

The Experience

The day starts with a safety briefing at the gorge entrance, then you wade into the river and swim next to the Kourtaliotis waterfall. After that, the real trek begins: you hike down the riverbed itself, staying mostly in the water as it cools you through the afternoon. The current is gentle enough to walk in, and the walls of the gorge rise around you the whole way. You'll stop partway through to leave the water and take a path with views down toward the coast.

By late morning or early afternoon, depending on the pace, you reach Preveli Beach. The palm trees there are the real draw—a rare grove on Crete's southern shore that makes the beach feel set apart from everywhere else on the island. You can swim again if you want, or just walk the sand and take photos. The guide carries a camera too, so you leave with images of the gorge and the beach to take home.

Lunch happens somewhere in the middle of the day, either during the river section or after you've reached the beach area. Bottled water comes with you the whole time. The trek is private—just your group and the guide—so the pace adjusts to who you are. Pickup from your hotel is included, and the guide speaks English or Greek depending on what you need.

What’s included

  • Private guide in English or Greek.
  • bottled water throughout the day.
  • lunch.

Operated by Your Guide Crete

Is this one for you? This is a private trek, so the pace and stops are yours to shape with the guide, which suits anyone who wants to move at their own rhythm and linger at the waterfall or beach without waiting for a larger group. If you're comfortable in water and have moderate fitness, the riverbed itself becomes your trail—you're not following a marked path, but wading and hiking through the gorge the way it actually flows.

Top questions

What's the Kourtaliotiko Gorge waterfall like when you get there?

The Kourtaliotis waterfall is the first stop after the safety briefing, and you swim right next to it. The water is cold and fresh, and the gorge walls frame it on all sides. It's the moment that sets up the rest of the day—you're already in the river, so the hike that follows feels like a natural continuation rather than a separate thing.

Do you stay in the water the whole time you're hiking down the river?

You hike mostly in the water on the way down the riverbed, which keeps you cool through the afternoon. Partway through, you leave the river and take a path on dry ground with views toward the coast and Preveli Beach. So it's a mix: water for the gorge section, then a walking path for the final stretch.

How fit do you need to be for this trek?

The trek requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness. You're walking in and out of water, navigating the riverbed, and covering distance over nearly six hours. It's not a casual stroll, but it's not a mountaineering expedition either. The guide adjusts the pace to the group, and you can rest at the waterfall and at Preveli Beach.

Is there an extra fee to enter Kourtaliotiko Gorge?

Yes, there's a 5-euro entrance fee per person to access the gorge. This is separate from the tour price and is paid at the gate.

Can children do this trek?

Children are welcome from age 13 and up. Younger children are not recommended because of the physical demands of hiking in and out of the river for several hours.
