Explore South Crete's nature and history

  • Walk through Spili village
  • Stop at Kourtaliotiko Gorge viewpoint
  • Visit Preveli Monastery grounds
  • Stroll in Preveli Palm Forest

The experience

How do you see the real South Crete without spending the whole day in a van? This tour leaves Rethymno and moves through the interior first: the mountain village of Spili, with its narrow stone streets and Venetian lion-head fountains, then the dramatic upper viewpoint of Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where the cliffs drop into the rugged landscape below. From there the route turns toward the coast and Preveli Monastery, where you walk the historic grounds, see the church and religious treasures, and stand on the terrace overlooking the southern coast.

The Preveli Palm Forest is where the day settles. The Megalopotamos River flows through a grove of rare Phoenix theofrasti palms (Cretan date palms found in only a few places on the island), and meets the sea in a quiet lagoon. You have time to walk among the palms, dip into the cool water, watch the birds and small animals that live in the grove, and simply sit with the sound of the river. Triopetra Beach, with its iconic rock formations, comes next if the day allows. The tour runs six hours total, which means you're back in Rethymno by early afternoon.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and carries a small group. Your guide speaks English and travels with you the whole way. Bottled water and WiFi are on board. A traditional Cretan lunch near the sea is optional and arranged separately, not part of the tour price, but available if you want to stay longer and eat where locals do.

Top questions

What is Kourtaliotiko Gorge like when you get there?

Kourtaliotiko Gorge is one of southern Crete's most dramatic natural landscapes. You view it from the upper viewpoint above, where you can see the deep gorge and sheer cliffs stretching through the rugged Cretan mountains. The visit is from this vantage point. You do not descend to the springs below.

Can you swim or wade in the Preveli Palm Forest?

Yes. The Preveli Palm Forest sits where the Megalopotamos River meets the sea in a tranquil lagoon. You have time to walk among the towering palms, and you can dip your toes in the cool water or wade if you choose. The area is peaceful and rich with wildlife: bird species and small animals live in the grove.

Is lunch included in this tour?

Lunch is not included in the tour price. A traditional Cretan lunch near the sea is optional and can be arranged separately if you want to extend your time and eat locally.

How much time do you spend at each stop?

The tour is built around a relaxed pace, so you have time to enjoy each place rather than move quickly through a checklist. The six-hour total includes travel time between stops, time at Spili, the Kourtaliotiko Gorge viewpoint, Preveli Monastery, and the palm forest, plus Triopetra Beach if the day allows.

What is the Preveli Palm Forest and why is it special?

The Preveli Palm Forest is a lush oasis where the Megalopotamos River flows through a grove of rare Cretan date palms, Phoenix theofrasti, before meeting the sea. This species thrives in only a few places on Crete, making the forest an ecological treasure. The area is also home to various bird species and small animals, and the peaceful sounds of the river and rustling palms create a tranquil setting.
