The Experience

Your first afternoon on Rhodes doesn't have to be spent figuring out which bus goes where. The tour starts in Rhodes town with a drive around the walls of the Medieval City—the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe, built in the 1300s by the Knights of St. John and inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list. You'll stop at Mandraki Harbour, the spot where the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, once stood. A local driver who knows the island handles the route and the timing, so you move through the highlights without building the day yourself.

From the harbour, you walk through the Acropolis of Rhodes, starting with a panoramic view of the city, then moving through the Temple of Pythian Apollo, the ancient stadium and amphitheatre. The Church of the Annunciation—the largest Orthodox church in town, with handmade paintings covering the walls—is also on the route. Then comes the scenic drive along the East Coast toward Lindos, a white village that looks the same as it did centuries ago. You have at least an hour on the ground to walk the narrow, winding streets at your own pace. If you climb up through them, you'll reach the Acropolis on the hilltop—the second most visited Acropolis in Greece after Athens—with views that justify the walk and plenty of photo stops along the way. Your driver waits at the exact spot where you were dropped off and brings you back.

The car is fully air-conditioned and holds either four or eight people depending on which option you book. Optional stops are available: a pottery factory to watch how ceramics are made using ancient techniques, or a gold factory if you want to pick up a souvenir. Before leaving Lindos, there's a photo stop at St. Paul's Bay, one of the island's most photographed beaches. Tours run five hours for the core route, or seven hours if you add lunch and want extra time in Rhodes town itself.
