The Experience

Your first afternoon on Rhodes doesn't have to be spent figuring out which bus goes where. The tour starts in Rhodes town with a drive around the walls of the Medieval City—the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe, built in the 1300s by the Knights of St. John and inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list. You'll stop at Mandraki Harbour, the spot where the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, once stood. A local driver who knows the island handles the route and the timing, so you move through the highlights without building the day yourself.

From the harbour, you walk through the Acropolis of Rhodes, starting with a panoramic view of the city, then moving through the Temple of Pythian Apollo, the ancient stadium and amphitheatre. The Church of the Annunciation—the largest Orthodox church in town, with handmade paintings covering the walls—is also on the route. Then comes the scenic drive along the East Coast toward Lindos, a white village that looks the same as it did centuries ago. You have at least an hour on the ground to walk the narrow, winding streets at your own pace. If you climb up through them, you'll reach the Acropolis on the hilltop—the second most visited Acropolis in Greece after Athens—with views that justify the walk and plenty of photo stops along the way. Your driver waits at the exact spot where you were dropped off and brings you back.

The car is fully air-conditioned and holds either four or eight people depending on which option you book. Optional stops are available: a pottery factory to watch how ceramics are made using ancient techniques, or a gold factory if you want to pick up a souvenir. Before leaving Lindos, there's a photo stop at St. Paul's Bay, one of the island's most photographed beaches. Tours run five hours for the core route, or seven hours if you add lunch and want extra time in Rhodes town itself.

Top questions

What is the Colossus of Rhodes and where do I see it on this tour?

The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world—a massive bronze statue that stood in Mandraki Harbour over 2,000 years ago. On the tour, you stop at Mandraki Harbour to see the exact location where it once stood, though the statue itself no longer exists. The harbour is still one of Rhodes' most recognizable landmarks.

How much time do I get to explore Lindos village and its Acropolis?

You have at least one hour in Lindos village to walk the narrow streets and explore at your own pace. If you climb up through the winding streets to the Acropolis on the hilltop, that's included in your time—the entrance fee to the Acropolis is 20 euros per person, paid separately. Your driver waits at the village entrance and returns you to that same spot when your time is up.

Is this tour good for a cruise ship passenger with a few hours between port calls?

Yes—the tour is specifically designed for cruise passengers and first-time visitors. The five-hour option covers the main highlights of Rhodes town and Lindos without requiring you to arrange transport or navigate on your own. The driver picks you up and returns you to your ship, and the timing is built around a short port call.

What's included in the private car, and how many people can ride?

The car is fully air-conditioned with a local knowledgeable driver. You can book either a sedan for up to four people or a minivan for up to eight. Both options include the car and driver for the full tour; lunch is available as an add-on if you choose the seven-hour option.

Can I add lunch or extend the tour to spend more time in Rhodes town?

Yes. The standard tour is five hours, but you can book a seven-hour option that includes lunch and gives you an extra hour to explore Rhodes' Old Town on your own. You can also request a stop at a pottery factory or gold factory during the drive if you're interested in those crafts.

What is the Medieval City of Rhodes, and why is it on this tour?

The Medieval City of Rhodes is the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe, built in the 1300s by the Knights of St. John. It's inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list and contains narrow streets, historic buildings and the Church of the Annunciation. The tour includes a drive around its walls and optional time to walk through it yourself if you book the seven-hour version.
