Naxos Cooking Class: Pick Veggies, Cook, Celebrate
Step into daily island life with farm walks, local animals, and village stories.
A half-day hands-on cooking class at Basiliko Farm in Potamia, Naxos, where you harvest fresh ingredients from the garden, prepare authentic Greek recipes step by step, and join a real village celebration with wine, traditional dancing and plate smashing. The farm is a working 5th-generation family operation, and the experience includes a walk through olive groves, vineyards and the historic village, with homemade lemonade and both lunch and dinner included.
The Experience
You arrive at a family farm in the heart of Potamia, one of Naxos's most traditional villages, and start by walking the property—past olive trees and vineyards, through the garden where you'll pick the vegetables for the day's meal, and among the animals (goats, sheep, chickens, pigs, a donkey) that live there. A guide walks you through how locals have farmed this land for five generations, what grows when, and how the wine is made. No cooking experience is needed; the recipes are traditional Naxian ones, and you learn them as you go, using the ingredients you just picked.
While the food cooks, you can join an optional walk through Potamia village itself—past Venetian towers and down to the local stream—or stay and watch the meal come together. Then you sit down to eat what you made, with unlimited local wine and homemade lemonade. The celebration that follows is not staged: you learn traditional Greek dances, dance with the family and other guests, and if you want, smash plates. Strangers who arrived as a group leave as part of one.
The class runs four hours and includes both lunch and dinner. A guide speaks English throughout. If you book private transportation, it's arranged separately; otherwise, you'll coordinate arrival in Potamia with the farm.
