The Experience

The sails snapped overhead as we left Mykonos behind—white houses shrinking into the blue. Our guide, Nikos, had this way of pointing out things without making it feel like a lecture. “That’s Rhenia,” he said, waving his coffee cup toward an island that looked empty except for rocks and wild thyme. The wind smelled salty and sharp, and I could already taste the sea spray on my lips. We dropped anchor in a cove so clear you could see every ripple on the sand below. I hesitated before jumping in (the water was colder than I expected), but after that first shock it felt like waking up from a nap you didn’t know you needed.

Lunch was simple—Greek salad, pasta with some kind of lemony dressing, fruit—and everyone ate with wet hair and bare feet. Someone spilled wine and nobody cared. Then we sailed over to Delos.
