The Experience
I almost missed the pickup because I was still trying to untangle my hair from the wind — Mykonos does that to you. But the driver waited, smiling like he’d seen it all before. The drive down to Agios Ioannis Beach was quick but bumpy, and I kept catching glimpses of blue between whitewashed walls. When we reached the catamaran, I had that weird mix of excitement and “should I have brought another layer?” (I didn’t need it.)
Our guide, Sofia, handed out towels and grinned when she saw me eyeing the water toys. “Later,” she promised. We set off past Psarou Beach — honestly, I’d only seen it on Instagram before. Up close, it’s louder somehow: music drifting over from beach clubs, people waving from yachts like they’re in a movie. The water really is that clear turquoise you hope for (and yeah, cold at first). Jumping in felt like hitting reset on my brain.
Lunch happened somewhere near Super Paradise Beach. The crew started grilling — garlic and lemon in the air mixing with sea salt. There was this salad with feta that tasted nothing like what I get at home (in a good way), and someone spilled wine but nobody cared. Conversation bounced between languages; Sofia told us about her grandmother’s old recipes while showing us how to say “kali orexi.” I probably butchered it but she just laughed.
The sun started sinking and everyone got quiet for a second — not awkward, just… content? Pink and gold everywhere, even on our plates. I still think about that light sometimes when I’m back in my kitchen. We drifted back slowly toward shore, hair tangled again, salt on my skin, not really wanting it to end.
