The Experience
“You see that line in the rock? That’s where the sea used to reach, before the mines,” Yannis said as we drifted past Cape Vani. He handed me a mug of coffee—strong, with a hint of cardamom—and pointed out the rusted skeletons of old mining carts half-swallowed by wildflowers. I didn’t expect to care about manganese history on a cruise around Milos, but something about his pride made it stick. The wind was still cool that early, and I remember the way salt clung to my skin even before our first swim.
We stopped in this bay—Firopotamos—where the water looked fake, almost neon blue against white cliffs. There was homemade breakfast (I’m still thinking about those little cheese pies) and some of us jumped straight in. I hesitated because honestly, May seas aren’t warm yet. But then Maria, one of the crew, laughed and tossed me a snorkel mask anyway. “It’s better once you’re in!” She was right; it felt like waking up twice.
Sykia Cave was next—a huge hollow in the rocks where sunlight poured through a collapsed roof. The echo inside made every splash sound bigger than it was. We swam under arches and found little fish darting between shadows. I tried saying “Sykia” properly and Li (from Shanghai) nearly choked on her orange slice laughing at my accent. After brunch (eggs with herbs from someone’s garden), we sailed on toward Kleftiko—the old pirate bay—where everyone went quiet for a bit just watching how the light hit those white volcanic stacks.
Lunch was grilled right there on deck near Gerakas beach: souvlaki skewers and cold beer while steam curled up from the sand nearby—the hot springs were real, not just a rumor. By then I’d stopped checking my phone for time or messages; you know that feeling when you just want to stretch out and let sun do its thing? Last stop was Poliegos at Galazia Nera (“Blue Waters”)—the clearest water I’ve ever seen, no exaggeration—and then we cruised past Klima’s rainbow houses as evening crept in. Even now, sometimes when I smell charcoal or sea salt together it takes me back there for a second.
