Volcanic hexagons carved into the rock by ancient lava flows frame the caves you paddle into as the sun drops.

A live English-speaking guide leads groups of up to ten. Double kayaks with rudders, life jackets, paddles and dry bags are provided, along with bottled water and GoPro photos. Children from age 10 are welcome. The route passes the shore below Fylakopi, once a major ancient Greek trading port.

The experience
You launch from Alogomandra Beach as the light turns golden and paddle toward Papafragas, a network of sea caves that once sheltered Christians fleeing persecution. The kayak is stable, a double with a rudder, and the guide stays close, pointing out the hexagonal basalt columns that ancient volcanic activity carved into the rock face. The water is clear enough to see the bottom in the shallows, and the caves open up as you approach, their dark mouths framing the sunset behind you.
The paddle takes you past Firopotamos Beach and the submerged ruins near Fylakopi, where you can see remnants of one of ancient Greece's most important trading ports just below the waterline. You'll swim in the calm water if you want to, and the guide carries a GoPro to capture the moment. Everything you bring (phone, camera, valuables) goes into the dry bag. Bottled water is on board. The return is unhurried, a slow paddle back to the beach as twilight settles and the sea flattens to glass.

Is this one for you?Small groups stay under ten paddlers, so you're not jostling for space in the caves or waiting for others to clear the water. This suits couples and small families who want the sunset and the caves without a crowd, and it keeps the pace relaxed enough that even hesitant swimmers feel steady in the kayak.

What's the water like when we paddle into Papafragas?
The water in Papafragas is calm and clear, letting you see the cave floor and the volcanic rock formations as you enter. The caves themselves are accessible by kayak, and the guide will paddle you through them and explain their history as hideouts for early Christians.
Do I need to know how to kayak before I book?
