The Experience

Eleven hours is a long day, but it's built that way because Elafonisi sits in the southwest corner of Crete and the drive from Rethymno takes time. The route itself becomes part of the experience: you travel through lush Cretan landscape in an air-conditioned vehicle with a local guide who knows what you're passing through. A coffee stop early on breaks up the ride, and later you'll have the chance to buy food and drinks at the stops, so you're not arriving at the beach hungry or thirsty.

Agia Sophia Cave sits partway along the route and is worth the detour. After that comes Elos, a traditional mountain village where the largest concentration of chestnut trees on the island grows. The landscape there is green and lush, a sharp contrast to what you'll see when you finally reach the coast.

Elafonisi Beach itself is the reason for the whole day. The pink sand comes from shells ground up by the sea, and the water is shallow and turquoise—safe for children, clear enough to see into. The beach is protected as part of the European Natura 2000 program, which means it's not overdeveloped. You have the afternoon and early evening there to swim, walk the sand and sit in the water. The return journey follows the same route back to Rethymno, arriving in the evening.
