The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so quiet on the drive out of Chania. Maybe it was the way our driver, Giorgos, let the radio play old Greek songs low in the background, or how the olive groves blurred past as we wound through those narrow roads. He pointed out Topolia Gorge. “Look up there,” he said, and I actually did. The cliffs really do look like they’re holding their breath. We stopped for coffee at a tiny taverna where the owner handed us sweet, gritty Greek coffee without asking what we wanted. I tried to say thank you in Greek (Efharisto?) and she grinned at my accent.

The walk to Elafonisi Beach is longer than you think when it’s hot: about 15 minutes down a sandy path that crunches under your shoes. But then you see it: that weirdly pale-pink sand, almost like someone spilled blush powder everywhere. The water is so clear you can see your toes even when you wade out waist-deep. There’s this salty breeze that makes your skin feel sticky but good. Kids were building lopsided castles and some older locals were sunbathing like they’d done it every summer for decades. Four hours went by fast; I spent most of it just lying there listening to nothing but waves and distant laughter.

On the way back, Giorgos asked if we wanted to stop at Agia Sofia cave. He told us stories about baptisms there and how sometimes people climb all 250 steps just for the view over the ravine (I didn’t try). It smelled cool and earthy inside, even though outside was all dust and sun glare. By the time we got dropped off at our hotel around five, I felt sandy and tired in that good way you get after being outside all day. I still think about that soft pink sand sometimes when I shake out my beach bag.
