The Experience

"The water there, it's so shallow you can walk out forever and still be standing," the driver said when we asked if it was worth the early start. He wasn't wrong. The pickup happens between 7 and 8am depending on where your hotel is in Chania, and then it's a straight 3.5-hour drive down the southwest coast of Crete in an air-conditioned bus. There's a 40-minute stop halfway for coffee, a toilet break, or a snack if you need it — and most people do, because the road winds and the morning is long.

When you arrive at Elafonisi, you park and walk about 15 minutes through the scrub to reach the beach itself. That walk is worth it. The sand really is pink — crushed shells and coral mixed into the white — and the water is so clear and so shallow that you can wade out for what feels like forever without it getting deeper than your waist. The beach is a protected nature reserve, which is why the water stays that color and why you'll see sea turtles if you're patient and quiet. Bring your own umbrella though; the sunbeds fill up fast, especially in summer, and the three canteens on the beach charge for everything. The toilets cost between 50 cents and two euros depending on which one you use.

You get four hours on the beach — enough time to swim, dry off, eat something, and still have a moment to just sit and look at the water. The bus leaves at a set time and gets you back to Rethymno by around 6:30pm, so you're not waiting around wondering when to head back. It's a long day out, but that's the only way to make it work from Chania.
