The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so tiny standing up at Aptera Fortress — you look out over Souda Bay and it’s just this wild sweep of blue, then the White Mountains way off in haze. Our guide, Maria, pointed at a crumbling wall and told us about battles I’d never heard of. There was a breeze that smelled faintly like wild thyme and dust.
