The experience

The tour starts with a drive around Chania itself: past the Venetian Lighthouse, the oldest working lighthouse in the Mediterranean, built in 1864, and the Firkas Fortress on the harbor's northwest side, built between 1610 and 1645 to protect the Venetian port. Your guide, a local fluent in English, explains how each layer of invaders (Venetian, Turkish, Greek) left its mark on the city's architecture and culture. You'll see the foundations of streets and sewage networks at Kasteli hill, where the ancient city stood, and the Byzantine wall dating from the 6th century AD if you want to linger there.

Then you have an hour to walk the old town on your own, dropped at Talos Square on the west side where the alleys are more authentic and less crowded. You can explore, shop, or simply wander. The guide cannot walk with you in the old town, their license covers driving tours only, but you're free to move at your own pace. On the way back through the city, there's a free tasting of olive oil, honey, pistachio and other local products at a cooperating shop if you want to stop.

The drive to lunch takes 45 minutes through Theriso Gorge, a six-kilometer stretch with vertical cliffs and lush vegetation. The restaurant sits at Drakona Village on the foot of the White Mountains. The owner cooks everything on wood fire from his own farm. Lunch costs around 25 euros per person and is paid directly to the restaurant. It's not part of the tour price. On the way back, you'll see panoramic views of Chania and Souda Bay from Malaxa Mountain, and you can stop at the Commonwealth Cemetery if you want to see the views of the White Mountains and Souda Bay from there. An optional wine tasting is available on weekdays for 45 minutes at 25 euros per person.
