The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way our guide, Yannis, waved us over outside this tiny café in Psirri — he was already laughing about something with the barista. I fumbled with my helmet strap (never looks cool) while he handed out bikes and told us not to worry about traffic because “Athenians have their own rhythm.” I could smell coffee and something sweet drifting from inside. Riding toward Koukaki felt different — less crowded, more leafy shade over the streets. There was this moment where we stopped for a view of the Acropolis at sunset; honestly, it didn’t feel real for a second. Someone in our group tried to take a selfie but got photobombed by a stray cat (classic Athens). The next restaurant had tables spilling onto the sidewalk and plates of grilled vegetables coming out fast enough to make your head spin. We shared everything family-style, even with people we’d just met an hour ago.

On the way back, there was one last stop for dessert — something sticky and sweet that Yannis called “the only reason my uncle ever learned to ride a bike.” My hands were sticky too but nobody cared. The city felt softer somehow in the evening air; maybe it was all the food or maybe just being shown around by someone who really loves Athens.
