The Experience

So the first thing that happened was Yannis (our guide) waving at an old lady selling koulouri near Syntagma — she handed him two, and he just grinned at us like, “You have to try these.” I’d barely gotten my helmet straight before I was munching on warm bread with sesame seeds, which honestly tasted better than most breakfasts I’ve had. The city was already buzzing even though it wasn’t that late in the morning — scooters zipping past, someone shouting across the street about coffee (I think?), and the air just had this faint smell of roasted nuts and traffic. Athens feels alive in a way that’s hard to explain until you’re weaving through it on two wheels.

I’d done walking tours before but never a bike tour in Athens. It’s different — we covered so much ground but it never felt rushed. We stopped under some orange trees by Hadrian’s Arch (Yannis pointed out how locals avoid sitting directly beneath them because of the bugs — which made me laugh since I’d almost parked myself there). He told us little things about each place — like why the guards at Parliament wear those pom-pom shoes, or how people sneak into the National Garden for shade in summer. At Zappeio, we watched kids racing their scooters while we sipped on cold freddo espresso (my first one — strong and sweet, totally wakes you up). There was this moment riding past Panathenaic Stadium where everything went quiet except for our tires on the stone path. Kind of stuck with me.

What surprised me was how relaxed it all felt. Even when we cycled through busier streets or past groups of tourists snapping photos, nobody seemed bothered by us. Yannis always checked if we were okay or needed water, and he gave tips about where to eat after (“Don’t order moussaka everywhere,” he warned). We saw both ancient sights and these everyday moments: a guy fixing his bike chain outside a bakery, teenagers laughing over souvlaki. The route was easy enough that anyone could do it — I’m not exactly an athlete and didn’t struggle once. By the end, my legs were tired but in a good way.
