The experience

The trip starts with a 09:30 bus departure from Thessaloniki, a scenic three-hour ride through mainland Greece countryside to Trikala, where you switch to a local bus bound for Kalambaka. You arrive at your hotel by early afternoon with time to settle in. That same day, a guide picks you up for a four-hour sunset tour that moves through Meteora's less-visited corners: the ancient hermitages of Bandovas, hermit caves carved into the rock, the Byzantine Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, and the old stone quarter of Kalambaka itself. You step inside one of the major monasteries before the light fades, then watch the sunset from a vantage point most visitors never reach.

On the second morning, you choose your own route: either a four-hour sightseeing tour that visits multiple monasteries (Saint Stephen's, the Great Meteoron, the Holy Trinity, Roussanou, and Varlaam, each with its own history and access difficulty), or a hiking tour with a local guide that covers the landscape on foot. The hiking option requires at least three participants and depends on weather. If conditions don't allow it or the group is too small, the morning sightseeing tour runs instead. After the tour ends around midday, you have free time in Kalambaka before the 15:15 bus departs back to Thessaloniki, arriving at 18:30.

The monasteries enforce a strict dress code: men need long trousers and sleeved shirts. Women must wear skirts below the knee and covered shoulders, or wrap a long scarf at the waist. Entrance fees to the monasteries are paid in cash on-site (€5 per monastery per person). Your bus tickets and detailed directions arrive by email 24 hours before departure, and the operator will confirm your hotel choice based on availability once you book.

What are the main monasteries I'll visit on this 2-day Meteora tour?

The itinerary includes five major monasteries: Saint Stephen's, the most accessible with no steps and a stone bridge entry; the Great Meteoron, the oldest and most important; the Holy Trinity, the hardest to reach with 145 carved rock steps; Roussanou, perched on a steep cliff; and Varlaam, the second largest. You enter at least one during the sunset tour and visit multiple others on the second morning, depending on which tour you choose.

Do I need to book the hiking tour in advance, or can I decide on the morning of day two?

You choose between the sightseeing and hiking tours when you book the overall package. The hiking tour requires a minimum of three participants and operates only if weather permits. If either condition isn't met, the morning sightseeing tour runs instead. Your choice is confirmed at checkout.

What's included in the price, and what do I pay separately?

The package covers one night's hotel accommodation, roundtrip bus transport from Thessaloniki, breakfast, both guided tours (sunset and morning), and entry to the monasteries visited during the tours. Meals and drinks beyond breakfast, and any monastery entrance fees if you visit additional sites on your own time, are separate. Monastery entry fees during the tours are included.

How much time do I have to explore Kalambaka on my own?

After your morning tour ends (around midday on day two), you have several hours of free time in the town of Kalambaka before the 15:15 bus departure back to Thessaloniki. This gives you time to walk the old district, grab lunch, or rest before the return journey.

What should I wear, and are there any restrictions I need to know?

The monasteries require modest dress: men must wear long trousers and shirts with sleeves. Women must wear skirts below the knee and cover their shoulders, or use a long scarf wrapped at the waist. Wear comfortable walking shoes for the uneven terrain and steps. Bring cash for monastery entrance fees (€5 per monastery) and any meals or drinks you want to buy in Kalambaka.
