The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel and heads straight to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, where most of the day unfolds. You'll walk through the Great Siege Tunnels (hand-carved during the 1779–1783 siege to defend against Spanish and French forces), and see how a horizontal blast hole became a gun emplacement. St. Michael's Cave sits over 300 metres up the Rock. During WWII it was being prepared as an emergency hospital when workers discovered a deeper cave system below. The Moorish Castle, built starting in the 8th century and rebuilt in the 14th, spreads across the northern end of the reserve with its Tower of Homage and fortified gates still standing.

O'Hara's Battery sits at 1,383 feet, the highest point on the Rock, and the Skywalk, a former military lookout now a glass platform, gives a 360-degree view across the Mediterranean. At Upper Apes Den, you'll encounter the Barbary macaques, the only wild apes in Europe. Around 200 live in nine packs across the upper reserve. The tour also includes the 100 Ton Gun at Napier of Magdala Battery, one of only two surviving examples built in 1870, with a 32-foot barrel that could fire a 2,000-pound shell eight miles away.

After the Upper Rock, you descend through the old town toward Main Street and Casemates Square, where you get between 1 and 1.5 hours depending on how much time the earlier sites took. This is your window to eat, walk the narrow streets, or shop. The tour can also include Europa Point at the southern tip (home to the Europa Point Lighthouse, built 1838–1841, with views into Morocco and Spanish Ceuta), and Catalan Bay, a fishing village on the eastern side of the Rock. You'll drive under the Gibraltar runway through Kings Way Tunnel and walk across the runway itself, seeing the border with Spain.
