The Experience

I’ll be honest — I’d barely heard of Seelow Heights before this day trip from Berlin. Most people talk about Normandy or Arnhem, but not this place. The drive out was quiet, just fields and that flat East German light. Our guide, Thomas, started telling us about the numbers — 768,000 Soviet troops against 150,000 Germans. It’s hard to picture until you’re actually standing there, you know? He passed around old maps and photos as we sipped coffee (instant, but somehow it fit the mood). The museum had this odd smell of dust and metal cabinets; I wandered off for a minute just to look at the trench models alone.

We rolled into Reitwein — blink and you’d miss it — but Thomas pointed out where the Soviets massed before launching their assault on Berlin. Later we stopped at Lietzen cemetery; there was this silence that settled over everyone as we read names on new gravestones added just recently. It’s not something you forget easily.

The last bit at Jahnsfelde hit hardest: an empty sports field that used to be a field hospital, then suddenly became chaos when Soviet planes attacked. There’s no monument or anything — just grass and an old crossroads where so many died in hours. On the drive back to Berlin, nobody talked much at first. Thomas let us ask questions when we were ready; he didn’t push or rush us along. I still think about that view from Zhukov’s post — wide open land all the way toward Berlin.
