The experience

The tour starts at Alexanderplatz, where you pick a bike suited to your needs and meet your English-speaking guide. From there you pedal through the city's layers: past the Houseball public art installation at Haus Schwarzenberg, along the 60-meter-long original Berlin Wall and its Documentation Center, and through Tiergarten Park to the Soviet War Memorial built in 1945. You'll see the Victory Column, the carillon with 68 bells (the largest in Europe by bell count), and the German Chancellery's transparent 36-meter façade finished in 2001. The pace is built for photo stops and questions, so you're not racing between sites.

The route takes you down Unter den Linden, the 1,390-meter boulevard lined with lime trees, where you pass the Humboldt University (founded 1809), St. Hedwig Cathedral with its turquoise dome, and the German Historical Museum in the Zeughaus, Berlin's oldest building on the boulevard. You'll ride past the Altes Museum and Neues Museum on Museum Island, both World Heritage Sites, and the Berlin Cathedral, the largest Protestant church in Germany. You'll pass the Führerbunker site where Hitler spent his last months, see the GDR Watch Tower from the Cold War border, and end near the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz: 368 meters high, the tallest structure in Germany. The whole route covers Nikolaiviertel's cobbled streets, the Rotes Rathaus (Red Town Hall) with its 74-meter clock tower, and dozens of other squares and buildings, each with a story the guide tells as you ride.
