The experience

The day starts with a train ride from Berlin to Potsdam: no driving, no parking worry. Once there, you pick up a city-cruiser bike and spend the next 4.5 hours riding through parks, gardens and the old town with your guide narrating as you go. The pace is leisurely enough that you're not racing. You're stopping to look at things. Sanssouci Palace appears first, where Frederick the Great held court, and the guide walks you through its history from the outside. Then you ride through the palace gardens and the windmill grounds, which gives you a sense of the scale of what these Prussian rulers built.

The Cold War sites anchor the second half. Cecilienhof Palace (the Marble Palace where Truman, Stalin and Churchill concluded the Potsdam Agreement in 1945) sits on the route, and so does the Glienicke Bridge, the infamous "Bridge of Spies" where Rudolf Abel and Gary Powers were exchanged in 1962. You also ride past the Berlin Wall as it stood in Potsdam and see what used to be the Death Strip. The guide connects these moments to the city's earlier role as a garrison town and the seat of Prussia's military power, so the landscape starts to make sense as you move through it.

The Dutch Quarter breaks up the day. It's a neighborhood Frederick-Wilhelm I built in the 1820s to house Dutch craftsmen, and it still looks the way it did then because it wasn't destroyed in the war. This is where you stop for lunch on your own (bring cash or check ahead for card payments). You'll also pass the Russian colony, ride along the Havel River and Jungfernsee, and end at Alter Markt, the central square, where the guide talks about St. Nicholas' Church and the royal family's place in Potsdam's history. The train back to Berlin leaves you with time to rest before dinner.
