Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Gori, Uplistsikhe and Mtskheta

  • Visit the Stalin Museum
  • Explore Uplistsikhe cave town
  • Visit Jvari Monastery in Mtskheta
  • Tour Svetitskhoveli Cathedral
  • Drive back to Tbilisi

The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your Tbilisi hotel and a drive toward Gori, where the Stalin Museum occupies a 1950s time capsule: the main exhibition building, Stalin's original birthplace house, and his personal railway carriage, all kept largely as they were. The museum reads like a preserved snapshot of Soviet-era presentation, with original displays walking through his life and rise. From there, the route continues to Uplistsikhe, an archaeological site carved into rock cliffs dating back to the 2nd millennium B.C. The cave complex sprawls across the hillside with streets, temples, wine cellars, pharmacies and structures still being studied — it once thrived as a Silk Road settlement and now stands as a maze of chambers and passages to move through at your own pace.

After Uplistsikhe, you drive to Mtskheta, Georgia's ancient capital and spiritual heart. Jvari Monastery sits on a hilltop overlooking the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers; it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, built where St. Nino erected the first wooden cross that marked Georgia's conversion to Christianity. The views from the monastery grounds sweep across the valley and the town below. Then comes Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, the country's most prominent church, where the 11th-century structure holds frescoes and, according to tradition, Christ's robe. You walk the cathedral grounds and step inside to see the interior, then wander the streets of Mtskheta itself before the drive back to Tbilisi.

The certified English-speaking guide travels with you throughout, explaining the sites and their histories. Transportation is included; the route covers roughly 10.5 hours from start to return. If you book the private option, you visit only Mtskheta's two main sites. If you choose the shared tour, the Stalin Museum and Uplistsikhe are added to the itinerary. A traditional Georgian lunch at a local restaurant can be arranged separately for an additional cost.

What’s included

  • Certified English-speaking guide throughout the day.
  • hotel pickup and return transportation to Tbilisi.

Is this one for you?Book the private option if you want to focus on Mtskheta's monasteries and spiritual sites without the longer drive to Gori. Choose the shared tour if you're interested in Soviet history and archaeology alongside the religious landmarks — the Stalin Museum and Uplistsikhe add depth but extend the day to its full 10.5 hours.

Top questions

What's inside the Stalin Museum in Gori?

The Stalin Museum consists of three parts: the main exhibition building with original displays from the 1950s covering his life and Soviet leadership, the original house where Stalin was born, and his personal railway carriage. The exhibits retain much of their original arrangement, so the space feels like stepping into a preserved era rather than a modern interpretation.

What can I actually see and do at Uplistsikhe?

Uplistsikhe is a cave complex carved into cliffs, with streets, temples, wine cellars, pharmacies and other chambers spread across the site. You explore the carved architecture and archaeological remains on foot; the complex dates back to the 2nd millennium B.C. and once served as a thriving settlement on the Silk Road, though many structures are still being studied and categorized.

Is Jvari Monastery hard to reach from Mtskheta?

Jvari Monastery sits on a hilltop overlooking Mtskheta and the river confluence below. The monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built where St. Nino placed the first wooden cross marking Georgia's conversion to Christianity, and the walk to it and around the grounds is part of the tour itinerary.

What's the difference between the private and shared tour options?

The private option focuses on Mtskheta's two main sites: Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. The shared tour adds the Stalin Museum in Gori and Uplistsikhe cave complex to the itinerary, making for a longer day that covers more ground and more of Georgia's history.

Is lunch included in the tour price?

Transportation and the certified English-speaking guide are included, but traditional Georgian lunch at a local restaurant is available as a separate add-on for an additional cost per person.

What's Svetitskhoveli Cathedral like inside?

Svetitskhoveli is Georgia's most renowned church, an 11th-century cathedral with frescoes and, according to legend, the resting place of Christ's robe. You walk the exterior to see the facades, then step inside to view the interior frescoes before wandering the streets of Mtskheta itself.
