The experience
The day starts with a drive to Mtskheta, about 20 kilometers outside Tbilisi, where you'll walk the old city and see Svetitskhoveli Orthodox Cathedral, built in the 11th century. The cathedral sits at the heart of what was once the capital of the eastern Georgian kingdom of Iberia, a place of extraordinary importance to Georgian history. From there you climb to Jvari Monastery, a 6th-century structure perched on a rocky mountaintop where the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers meet. The monastery overlooks Mtskheta from above, and the views frame the town's layout and significance. According to tradition, a female evangelist named Saint Nino erected a wooden cross here in the early 4th century on the site of a pagan temple, and the cross drew pilgrims from across the Caucasus. Jvari and Mtskheta together were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
The second stop is Gori, where you'll enter the Joseph Stalin Museum. Inside a Greco-Italianate pavilion stands the small wooden hut where Stalin was born in 1878 and spent his first four years. His father was a shoemaker who rented one room and kept a workshop in the basement. Outside the museum sits Stalin's personal railway carriage, a green armour-plated Pullman that weighs 83 tons and was used from 1941 onwards, including trips to the Yalta and Tehran Conferences. The museum retains its Soviet-era character and holds artifacts and treasures from the Soviet leader's life.
The final destination is Uplistsikhe, an ancient rock-hewn town about 100 kilometers west of Tbilisi and one of Georgia's oldest urban settlements. The central part of the complex contains the bulk of the rock-cut structures, connected to the southern section by a narrow pass and tunnel. Narrow alleys and staircases radiate from the central street to different chambers and rooms carved into the rock. The site has been on the tentative UNESCO World Heritage list since 2007. Your private guide will walk you through the layout and explain how life unfolded here through the Middle Ages.

What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Russian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (1 to 12 years): free.
How long does the full-day tour take?

What is Jvari Monastery and why does it matter?
Jvari is a 6th-century monastery built on a mountaintop at the confluence of two rivers, overlooking Mtskheta. It marks the spot where Saint Nino, credited with converting Georgia to Christianity, erected a wooden cross in the early 4th century that reportedly worked miracles and drew pilgrims from across the Caucasus region.
What will I see inside the Stalin Museum?
The museum houses Stalin's birthhouse, a small wooden hut with two rooms where he spent his first four years, along with artifacts and treasures from his life. Outside stands his personal railway carriage, an armour-plated Pullman weighing 83 tons that he used from 1941 onwards, including at the Yalta and Tehran Conferences.
What makes Uplistsikhe different from the other two stops?
Uplistsikhe is a rock-hewn town carved into the stone itself, with narrow alleys, staircases and chambers radiating from a central street. It's one of Georgia's oldest urban settlements and shows how people lived here through the Middle Ages, rather than focusing on a single monument or museum.
