The experience

Tusheti sits in the far north of Georgia, accessible by road only from mid-June through October because of winter snow and ice. The 3-day route is built around that window: the region closes to visitors the rest of the year. You leave Tbilisi by 4x4, drive 120km on asphalt through the Kakheti wine region and over Gombori Pass, then turn onto the rough track that climbs 70km through the Abano Pass at 2,900 meters above sea level. The road is gravel and dirt, with steep sections and no guardrails. The 4x4 is not optional here.

Omalo, the administrative center of Tusheti, sits at high altitude and serves as your base for two nights. The village itself is small: a cluster of stone houses and a few family guesthouses that take in visitors during the short season. Breakfast and dinner are included both nights. Lunch is not, so you'll need to arrange that in the village or bring supplies. On day two you explore the surroundings on foot or by vehicle, visiting the village of Dartlo. On day three you visit Shenako and Diklo before the long drive back to Tbilisi, which takes most of the afternoon.

The tour is private, meaning your group travels alone with the driver rather than joining others. The driver speaks English and handles all navigation and logistics. When can you actually visit Tusheti?
