2-Day West Georgia Tour: Caves, Canyons, Waterfalls from Tbilisi
Prometheus Cave, Okatse Canyon, Kinchkha Waterfall, and a hot spring at dusk: all in two days from Tbilisi
A 2-day tour from Tbilisi to western Georgia's caves, canyons and waterfalls, with professional guide, hotel pickup, transport, breakfast and overnight accommodation in a local family house. Day one covers Prometheus Cave (the largest in Georgia, with underground lakes), Okatse Canyon (a 2-kilometer ravine 20 to 100 meters deep with a 70-meter waterfall), Kinchkha Waterfall at 1,000 meters altitude, and a soak in a natural hot spring by the river at evening. Day two includes a 300-meter boat trip through Martvili Canyon on the river Abasha, plus swimming at a local dam site. The tour visits non-touristy places and runs Tuesday through Wednesday if you book a Monday departure, since the canyons and caves close that day.

The experience
What makes this two-day trip different from a rushed day excursion is the overnight stay in a local family house with breakfast included, which lets you reach the remote western sites without burning daylight on the drive back. The tour picks you up from your Tbilisi hotel and moves through the landscape in an air-conditioned minivan with a professional guide who speaks English or Russian. Day one is built around water in three forms: Prometheus Cave, discovered in 1984 and still mostly unexplored (only one tenth is open to tourists), holds underground lakes and rivers you walk past for about an hour. Okatse Canyon, a natural monument carved into a ravine 3 to 6 meters wide and up to 100 meters deep, stretches over 2 kilometers with several waterfalls, one reaching 70 meters. Kinchkha sits at 1,000 meters altitude with two waterfalls and a canyon of its own.
The evening soak in the hot spring is the stated highlight: you sit under a small waterfall fed by warm water near the river, with nobody else around, regardless of the weather outside. Day two centers on Martvili Canyon, where a boat carries you 300 meters down the river Abasha through deep green water framed by mountain walls. The canyon was once a bathing place for Georgian nobility and now draws visitors for the scenery and the river itself. If the weather holds, you can swim in the river. If not, the route back to Tbilisi passes Borjomi or Chiatura, both accessible stops. Before the return drive, there's also a local dam built in the 1930s, known mainly to locals, where swimming is possible. Bottled water travels with you throughout, and the minivan returns you to your Tbilisi hotel by day's end.
