The Experience

The first thing I noticed when we climbed into the van for our Moorea half-day tour was how everyone seemed a little shy, but our guide—Teva—just grinned and started telling us about the old volcano crater before we’d even left the parking lot. The road twisted up between these green walls (honestly, it almost looked fake), and suddenly we were pulling over at the Belvedere Lookout. Teva pointed out Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay below, both shining in that weird blue you only get in French Polynesia. There was this breeze that smelled like wet leaves and fruit skins. I tried to take a photo but just ended up staring instead. Someone asked about the legends of the place, and Teva launched into a story about ancient warriors hiding in the valleys—I didn’t catch every detail, but it felt like he really believed it.

We stopped next at an old village by a river—there were mossy stones that Teva said were part of an ancient marae (temple). He showed us where archers used to train, which I never would’ve guessed from looking at it. The ground was soft underfoot, and there was this low hum from insects I couldn’t see. At some point a dog wandered by and just sat with us for a bit—nobody seemed to mind. After that we drove through pineapple fields near the Opunohu Agriculture School; the smell was sweet but also kind of earthy, not like supermarket pineapples at all.

I’m not usually big on group tastings, but at the Rotui juice factory they handed out tiny glasses of guava nectar and some local pineapple wine (which is… different). Everyone laughed when I made a face—guess I’m not as brave as I thought. Teva explained how everything is grown right there on Moorea, which made it feel less touristy somehow. We had time for questions or just wandering around before heading back. I still think about that view from Belvedere sometimes—it sneaks up on you later when you’re not expecting it.
