The experience
The tour starts with Fort Douaumont, the fortification that anchored the German defensive line. Your guide walks you through the gun turrets and underground passages, then moves to the Ossuary and cemetery where thousands of remains rest beneath a single roof. The scale of the loss becomes physical here: row after row of white crosses stretches across the grounds, each one marking a soldier who fell in the ten-month battle that killed or wounded nearly a million men.
From there you visit Fleury-devant-Douaumont, one of the villages that was so completely destroyed it was never rebuilt, and the Trench of the Bayonets, where soldiers were buried standing upright in their trench. You walk the remaining trenches and see the shell holes still pocking the landscape: craters so deep and numerous they reshape how the ground looks. A museum dedicated to the battle holds objects from fighters on both sides, and your guide explains what each artifact reveals about the soldiers who carried it.
The guide speaks English or French and is included with the tour. Private transportation means you travel in your own vehicle rather than in a shared coach, and all entry tickets are covered. Bring water or use the bottled water provided. The day involves substantial walking across uneven terrain and exposed ground.
