Learn to stand on a board in the foam, not the open ocean

Beginner surf lessons in the Basque Country teach you to ride waves in the broken foam, with a maximum of 5–6 people per class and all boards supplied. The instructor covers water safety, wave mechanics, body surfing warm-up, and the techniques to pop up and glide, working in English, Spanish or French. No prior experience or physical skills are required.

The experience

The class starts with a walk through the beach and the water to show you the safe zones, the currents, and how waves actually work. You'll do a body surf warm-up first (no board, just your body in the foam), so you get a feel for the conditions before you ever stand up. Then the instructor teaches the pop-up technique on the sand, where you can practice the motion without the ocean moving under you.

Once you're in the water, you work on balance and the mechanics of standing, all in the broken foam where the waves have already lost their power. The small group size (5 or 6 people maximum) means the instructor can watch each person and adjust the lesson to what you actually need. You'll have a board that fits your size and ability, and the whole session runs 2 hours.

No physical skills are required to start, and the class is open to anyone from age 6 onward. Come as you are. The boards and all the gear are there waiting for you. Public transportation runs nearby if you need it to get to the beach.

What’s included

  • Surfboard and gear tailored to your size.
  • instruction in water safety, wave mechanics, and pop-up technique.
  • 2 hours of guided practice in the foam.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and French.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly do I learn in a 2-hour beginner surf lesson?

The lesson covers water safety and how currents and waves work, then moves into body surfing without a board, pop-up technique on the sand, and finally balance and gliding in the foam. You'll practice standing and riding broken waves, building from theory to the water step by step.

Why does the class limit itself to 5 or 6 people?

Small groups let the instructor watch each person closely and move you forward faster. You get feedback on your technique instead of being one of many, and the pace stays matched to where you actually are.

Do I need to own a surfboard or bring my own gear?

No. Boards and all combinations are included, and they're sized to fit you. Bring yourself and a moderate level of physical fitness. Everything else is there.

What age can children start, and do they learn the same way as adults?

Children can start at age 6. The lesson is the same beginner format for all ages (theory, body surfing warm-up, pop-up practice, and time in the foam), so kids and adults work through the same progression.
