The Experience
“Lean forward — not too much!” That’s what our guide, Antoine, kept saying while we practiced on the sidewalk near Place de la Concorde. I was nervous at first (I mean, who isn’t the first time they stand on a Segway?), but after a few wobbly circles it felt almost silly how quickly you get used to it. There’s something about rolling past the Tuileries Garden with the breeze in your face and that faint smell of fresh bread from a nearby bakery — I don’t know, it just makes you feel like you’re part of the city instead of just watching it.
We zipped along wide boulevards and paused at spots like the Vendôme Column and Pont Alexandre III. Antoine pointed out details I’d never noticed before — like how the gold on the bridge gleams differently depending on where you stand. At one point he snapped a photo of us with the Eiffel Tower behind (he joked he’s taken more photos here than he has of his own family). I tried to say “Palais de Tokyo” in French and totally butchered it; Antoine laughed and said even Parisians mess it up sometimes. The traffic noise faded as we reached the quieter gardens near Trocadéro — just birds and distant voices echoing off stone.
I didn’t expect how much ground we’d cover in two hours. We saw everything from Grand Palais to little corners near Orsay Museum where locals were reading or just sitting in silence. The Segways themselves are kind of fun — ours had these quirky designs that made people smile as we passed by. There was this moment under the trees by Lady Diana’s memorial where everything went quiet for a second except for our wheels humming along. I still think about that view back toward the river.
