“Wait, that’s the real one?” I blurted out, a little too loud, in front of Manet’s Luncheon on the Grass. Our guide Camille just grinned and nodded—she must hear that all the time. Afterwards, we piled into a van for the drive up to Montmartre. I’d always pictured it as just touristy cafés and souvenir shops, but walking those steep cobblestone streets changed my mind. There’s still a bit of grit under all the charm. Camille stopped us by a faded blue doorway—“Van Gogh lived here,” she said, almost offhand, like it was no big deal. We passed Place du Tertre where painters called out in French and English (“Portrait? You have nice eyes!”), then ducked into Sacré-Cœur just as bells started ringing. The air inside was cool and smelled faintly of wax. My legs were tired but I didn’t really care—I was trying to soak up every weird detail.

I think my favorite part was just sitting on the steps outside Sacré-Cœur with everyone catching their breath, watching Paris sprawl out below. Someone tried to point out the Eiffel Tower through the haze (not sure if they actually saw it). There was a guy playing accordion nearby—so cliché it made me laugh, but also kind of perfect.
