The Experience

There were these little moments where she’d stop mid-story to belt out a verse from Piaf or Aznavour, no backing track, just her voice bouncing off the narrow streets. Sometimes people passing by would join in for a line or two—one guy even danced a few steps before disappearing into a bakery. It didn’t feel staged at all; more like we’d stumbled into some local tradition that nobody bothered to advertise.

I didn’t expect to care much about the old cabarets or Renoir’s favorite haunts, but hearing about Dalida’s house while Anne-Sophie sang one of her songs—right there on the sidewalk—was oddly moving. The sky kept threatening rain but never really delivered; instead there was this soft light over Clos Montmartre’s tiny vineyard and you could almost smell the grapes if you squinted hard enough. By the time we reached Sacré-Cœur Basilica, my feet were tired and my head was full of half-remembered lyrics. Even now, I catch myself humming bits of “La vie en rose” when I think back.
