The Experience
We almost missed the van in Paris because I got distracted by a bakery window—classic me. Our guide, Camille, just grinned and waved us over like it happens all the time. The drive out to Mont Saint-Michel was longer than I expected (about four hours), but honestly, watching the countryside change from city gray to Normandy green was its own kind of meditation. Someone in our group napped, someone else tried to teach me French tongue-twisters (I failed spectacularly).
The first sight of Mont Saint-Michel rising out of the tidal flats is…well, it’s weirdly sudden. Like you’re in a fairy tale but also slightly damp because the wind off the bay is real. Camille told us stories about monks hiding from invaders here—she pointed at mossy stones where arrows supposedly landed. Inside the Abbey, there’s this hush that makes your footsteps echo too loud. The cloister was my favorite; sunlight slanting through arches, salt air mixing with incense. I touched one of the old stone columns and it felt cold and gritty under my palm—hard not to think about how many hands have done that.
Lunch was on our own (the omelettes are famous but expensive—I split one with another traveler). Afterward we wandered down crooked lanes past souvenir shops and cats sunning themselves on windowsills. At one point I lost my group for a few minutes and ended up chatting with a local woman who’d lived there her whole life; she laughed when I tried to pronounce “Mouton Blanc.”
The day trip wrapped up with a cider tasting nearby—Normandy cider is dry and a little funky, nothing like what I’ve had at home. We clinked glasses in this low-ceilinged barn while Camille explained how apples here taste different because of the salty air. On the ride back to Paris, everyone was quiet for a while. I kept thinking about those tides swallowing up the causeway every night, how people have built their lives around something that changes so much.
