Loire vines rolling past, Vouvray sips in sunlight, laughter in old cellars

You’ll travel from Tours into the heart of Loire Valley vineyards with an English-speaking guide, visiting two family-run wineries near Amboise and Vouvray. Taste local wines right where they’re made, meet producers who share their stories (and maybe even their dogs), and return feeling like you’ve touched something real beneath all those rolling hills.

The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so small standing between those rows of vines just outside Amboise. It’s funny — you see photos of the Loire Valley everywhere, but actually breathing in that damp earth and catching the first whiff of fermenting grapes is different. Our guide, Camille, waved us over by the minivan outside the tourism office (she had this scarf with little grapes on it, which made me smile for some reason). We set off through these winding roads, windows cracked open a bit because it was warm for April and I wanted to hear the birds.

The first stop was this place run by a family who’d been making wine since before my grandparents were born. Their dog trotted out to greet us — I think his name was Biscotte? — and then we slipped into their tasting room. The air inside was cool and smelled faintly of stone and something sweet. Camille walked us through how to taste AOC Touraine wines properly (I definitely swirled too hard and nearly spilled mine, which got a laugh from one of the owners). The Vouvray was crisp, almost like biting into a green apple, but softer somehow. I kept thinking about how the Loire river must shape everything here — even the way people talk feels gentle.

After that we drove on to another winery, smaller still. The winemaker there looked like he’d just come in from the fields — mud on his boots, hands stained purple at the edges. He let us peek into his cellar where it was quiet except for our footsteps echoing off old limestone walls. There was this moment when he poured us each a glass and waited while we tasted; nobody said anything for a second. I still think about that silence — just sunlight coming through the doorway and all of us holding our glasses up like some kind of toast without words.
