The Experience

“You ever tried rillons?” our guide, Sandrine, asked as she handed me a little plate in the first winery. I’d barely had time to answer before the smoky-salty smell hit me — honestly, I didn’t even know what rillons were until that moment. The Touraine countryside outside Tours was all green vines and soft hills, but inside that cellar it was cool and smelled like wet stone and old wood. Sandrine explained how the Chenin grapes grow best here because of the soil — “terroir,” she kept saying — and I tried to remember all the names but got distracted by the fizz of a sparkling white on my tongue.

The drive between estates was quiet, except for someone in our group making a joke about French drivers (the minivan was way comfier than I expected). Out the window, sunlight flickered through rows of vines and you could see tiny villages tucked into the landscape. At the second stop, we walked straight into a working cellar — barrels everywhere, that sharp yeasty smell in the air. The winemaker himself poured us a deep red and told us about his grandfather’s old harvest stories; his hands were stained purple at the edges. Tasting cheese with wine sounds cliché until you’re actually there, trying to pronounce “rillettes” while everyone laughs at your accent.

I didn’t expect to care about grape varieties or why Malbec tastes different here than in Argentina, but somehow it mattered when Sandrine pointed out how Loire reds are lighter and fresher. There’s something about standing in a vineyard with a glass in your hand while someone local tells you their family’s story — I still think about that view over the fields as afternoon faded. We left with crumbs on our shirts and maybe a bit of wine on my sleeve (oops), but mostly just this warm feeling of having been let in on something quietly special.

What’s included

Your afternoon includes comfortable chauffeured transfers by air-conditioned minivan from either Tours or Amboise, guided visits at two Touraine wineries with plenty of time for tastings of sparkling, white, rosé, and red wines paired with regional cheeses and charcuterie specialties like rillettes. Water is always available during travel and tastings—and there’s room for laughter (and maybe some new pronunciations) along the way before heading back as evening settles over the valley.
