The Experience

The minivan was supposed to pick up at 8:30, but our guide arrived at 8:15 with coffee and an apologetic shrug — "the traffic, it lies to us," he said in English that was better than his French accent suggested. That early start turned out to matter. By the time we pulled into the Château de Chenonceau parking lot, the morning light was still soft on the water, and the crowds hadn't yet filled the bridge. Chenonceau sits across the Indre River like it's floating, and walking through the galleries with the guide explaining the Renaissance details — the coffered ceilings, the tapestries — you start to understand why this one gets the postcards. The tour here is guided, so you're not wandering alone; you move through the rooms in a small group, maybe ten or twelve people, and the guide points out things you'd miss: the kitchen in the tower, the way the light falls through the windows at certain hours.

After Chenonceau, we had free time in Amboise, the old capital of the Loire Valley. This is where you eat lunch on your own — there are restaurants and cafés all over the medieval center, and the streets are narrow enough that you can wander without getting lost. We grabbed a sandwich and sat by the river for an hour. It's a real town, not a museum piece, so you see locals buying groceries and kids on school breaks, which somehow makes it feel less like a tourist stop. The guide met us back at the minivan right on schedule, and then we drove to Chambord.

Chambord is the hunting lodge King François I built, and it's enormous — 426 rooms, 282 fireplaces, and a double helix staircase that the guide said probably came from Leonardo da Vinci's sketches. You can see why he'd say that; the staircase spirals up without the two flights ever crossing, which is the kind of thing that makes you stop and stare. The château sits in a national game reserve, so there's forest around it, and the scale of the place is different from Chenonceau — less intimate, more "I am a king and this is what I built to prove it." The guided tour walks you through the main rooms and explains the architecture, the history, the details. By the time we finished, it was late afternoon, and the drive back to Tours took about an hour. We got back around 6pm, tired and full of castle details we'd probably forget by next week.
