The experience
The drive from Le Havre takes about ninety minutes, and your guide uses that time to walk you through the events that led to the Nazi occupation of France in 1940, the planning of the June 6, 1944 landing, and the specific role of Colonel Rudder's 225 rangers at Pointe du Hoc. By the time you arrive at the first stop, you have the context the landscape alone cannot give you.
Omaha Beach is where you stop to photograph the shoreline and orient yourself to the scale of the assault. Your guide suggests restaurants for a quick lunch, then you move on to the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, the most visited site on the landing beaches. A short film pays tribute to soldiers who died in the Battle of Normandy, and a small museum sits on the grounds. You then walk among the 9,387 graves. A number your guide will have explained by then, so the rows mean something. From there, the route branches depending on what you want to see: the casemates and 155mm cannons still standing at Longues-sur-Mer, the remains of the artificial port at Arromanches-les-Bains, or the Pegasus Bridge at Benouville, renamed to honor the British airborne commando who seized it on the night of June 5 to 6. Your guide handles all the driving and decides the pace. You decide which stops matter most to you.
The tour runs seven to eleven hours depending on how many sites you choose and how long you spend at each one. You travel in a private vehicle with bottled water, French croissants and snacks provided. Your guide speaks English, Spanish or French. Choose at booking. Hotel pickup is included. The return follows the same route back to your hotel.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and French.
What is the Pegasus Bridge and why does it matter to the D-Day story?
The Pegasus Bridge at Benouville was seized by a British airborne commando unit on the night of June 5 to 6, 1944, in one of the first actions of the invasion. It was renamed Pegasus Bridge in honor of that unit, the sixth airborne British division. Your guide can include it as the final stop on the return journey if you choose.
How much walking is involved in this tour?
The American Cemetery requires respectful walking among the graves, but there is no strenuous hiking. Pointe du Hoc and the other sites involve moderate walking on flat or gently sloped ground. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and infants can travel in a pram or stroller.
Can I choose which beaches and sites to visit, or is the itinerary fixed?
The itinerary is completely flexible. Your guide tailors the route and the time spent at each stop to your interests. You decide whether to watch the film at the cemetery, visit the museum, or skip ahead. You also choose which additional sites (Longues-sur-Mer, Arromanches, or the Pegasus Bridge) fit the day you want.
Is lunch included in the tour?
Lunch is not included, but your guide will suggest restaurants near Omaha Beach where you can eat quickly before moving to the next stop. Bottled water, French croissants and snacks are provided in the van.
Does the tour include hotel pickup?
Yes, the tour includes private transportation and pickup from your hotel in Le Havre or the surrounding area. The drive to the first site takes about ninety minutes, and the return follows the same route back to your hotel.
