  • Learn about terroir and wine appellations
  • Pass Mont Brouilly and wine towns
  • Stop at La Madone Chapel viewpoint
  • Visit small family winery and meet winemaker
  • Learn semi-carbonic maceration process

The Experience

The route follows the Beaujolais "Route des Vins" from Lyon through charming wine towns and past Mont Brouilly, a dormant volcano covered in vineyards. Your guide introduces you to the concept of terroir—the French philosophy of how soil, climate and landscape shape wine—and explains the different appellations of Beaujolais crus as you drive through Régnié, Morgon and Fleurie. You stop at La Madone Chapel, which sits high enough that on clear days you can see the Alps and Mont Blanc across the landscape.

At a small family winery, you meet the winemaker and learn the semi-carbonic maceration process unique to Beaujolais production. You then move into the caveau (wine-tasting room) to taste several crus wines in a relaxed, friendly setting. The second stop is a château estate with a magnificent cellar full of oak barrels, where you taste more crus wines from different terroirs while your guide describes their aromas, balance and complexity. In total, you taste 9–10 wines across both stops.

A Mercedes deluxe minivan picks you up from your Lyon location and handles all the driving, so you can focus on the wines and the landscape. Your guide speaks English, Spanish or French depending on your preference. The tour runs 4.5 hours and does not include lunch, so plan accordingly if you want to eat before or after.
