The experience

The day starts at 8:50 am in front of Lyon's Office de Tourisme on Bellecour Square, where you board an air-conditioned eight-seat minibus for the 40-minute drive north. The route crosses into the Beaujolais region, climbing through granite terroirs and ocher-stone villages (Saint Véran, Leynes, Fuissé) toward the Mâcon vineyards. A stop at Moulin-à-vent introduces the Gamay grape and its landscape. The guide explains what the soil here produces and why.

At 10:45 am you arrive at the first family estate. The visit covers the winery's history, barrel-aging techniques and the cellar itself, then moves into a tasting of white and red wines, including the region's signature Pouilly-Fuissé. The wines are described by the guide (finesse, freshness, oak finish), so you understand what you're tasting, not just drinking it. After this stop, the tour climbs to Solutré Rock, a 493-meter limestone formation that dominates the Mâcon vineyards and is also a major Palaeolithic site. Time here is for photos and to take in the view.

Lunch happens in Cluny, a medieval town famous for its abbey. The local restaurant offers a menu of the day around 20 euros, paid separately. The afternoon continues to a second Burgundy château producing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. You visit the vaulted cellar and taste six more wines in what the operator describes as a friendly atmosphere. By late afternoon the minibus returns you to Lyon.
