The experience
Eight and a half hours takes you through three of Provence's most visited towns in a single day. The minibus picks you up in Aix-en-Provence and heads first to Saint-Remy de Provence, where you'll walk through the open-air market (Saturday or Wednesday depending on the day you book), then visit Saint-Paul de Mausole, the monastery where Van Gogh was admitted after the ear incident and where he painted some of his most recognizable works. The guide walks you through the grounds and explains what drew him there and what he created during his stay.
From Saint-Remy, the route climbs to Les Baux de Provence, a fortified village perched on a rocky ridge with views across the Alpilles valley. You have free time to wander the narrow streets, sit in the square or grab lunch at your own pace. The minibus then descends to Arles, the UNESCO-listed Roman town where Van Gogh spent his most productive months. The guide shows you the Arles Amphitheatre, one of the best-preserved Roman structures in France, and points out the streets and cafés that appear in his paintings and letters. You'll also browse the Provençal market in Arles before the return journey to Aix-en-Provence.

Is this one for you?The tour departs from Aix-en-Provence and returns there at the end, so you don't need a car or local transport to reach the three towns. The minibus handles the route and the driving. This works well if you're staying in Aix or arriving by train, since the pickup and drop-off are in the city itself.

What is Saint-Paul de Mausole and why did Van Gogh go there?
Saint-Paul de Mausole is a monastery in Saint-Remy de Provence where Van Gogh admitted himself in 1889 after cutting off part of his ear.
