The experience
Cassis sits on the coast where fishing boats still tie up at the dock and the Wednesday and Friday market fills the harbor square. You arrive with the morning free to explore on your own: walk the narrow streets, grab a coffee at a waterfront café, or browse the market stalls if the day aligns. The Calanques, a series of limestone inlets carved into the cliffs just offshore, can be seen from the port. If you want to get closer, a one-hour boat cruise is available as a separate ticket you book and pay for on the spot.
The afternoon shifts inland to the Luberon, a region of perched villages and ochre-colored earth. Lourmarin comes first, a village built on a hillside with a Renaissance château at its center. You'll have free time to climb the narrow lanes. Roussillon, famous for its rust-red buildings and the ochre cliffs that surround it, gets a photo stop and time to walk through. Gordes, perhaps the most dramatic of the three, sits on a steep ridge overlooking the valley. You'll stroll the village and take in the view. The minivan is air-conditioned and seats the group together, and your guide speaks English or French depending on the departure.
The tour runs 11 hours total and returns to Aix by mid-afternoon, leaving time for an early dinner or a rest before evening plans. Note that the Calanques cruise can be cancelled if weather turns rough or if the coastal road closes. The company does not refund the cruise ticket in those cases. Children from age 4 are welcome. Younger children cannot join.
