Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Zipline adventure and mud spa visit

  • Experience 16-line zipline tour
  • Enjoy ocean and cave views
  • Visit Sabeto Thermal Mud Pool
  • Relax in hot springs

The first thing I remember is the sound — birds somewhere above us, and this low hum of nerves as we got harnessed up for the zipline. We were just outside Nadi, but honestly it felt like another world. Our guide, Saki, handed me my helmet with a grin and said something about “Fijian flying lessons.” I laughed but my hands were sweating. The first zip was wild — you shoot out over these deep canyons and suddenly the air smells green (I know that makes no sense). After a few lines you stop thinking about your feet dangling and start looking at the ocean way out there. By the time we zipped through a cave (yes, through), I was yelling like a kid. Didn’t expect to love it that much.

Lunch happened right after — chicken curry and rice under this big shelter where everyone sort of collapsed together, swapping stories. It’s funny how fast strangers become friends when you’ve all just screamed your heads off on a zipline. Saki showed us some weird fruit growing near the tables; he called it “bu” and cracked one open for us to taste — kind of sweet and grassy? I probably made a face. Anyway, after that we piled into an air-conditioned van (thank god) and headed for the Sabeto mud pool.

I’d seen photos but nothing prepares you for actually slathering warm grey mud all over yourself with a bunch of giggling tourists and locals. The air smelled earthy — not bad, just real. There was this old Fijian woman who helped us get it right; she tapped my arm when I missed a spot behind my ear. The hot springs themselves were almost too warm at first, but after a minute you just float there watching steam curl up into the trees. I still think about that quiet moment before we had to rinse off and head back to Nadi — skin tingling, hair full of sun.
