The Experience

The driver was ten minutes late picking us up from the hotel — not that we minded, since it gave me time to hunt for my missing flip-flop (found it under the bed, naturally). When we finally set off toward the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, I kept thinking about how green everything looked outside the window. Our guide, Jone, joked about the clouds “sleeping on the mountain’s nose,” which made me laugh harder than I expected. The garden itself was quieter than I imagined — just birds and our footsteps crunching on gravel. The orchids were everywhere, all colors and shapes. I tried to count them but gave up after maybe twenty. There’s this smell, too — like rain mixed with something sweet and earthy.

Next stop: Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pool. Honestly, I hesitated at first because I’m not usually one for getting muddy in public (or private). But Jone handed me a bucket of warm gray mud with a grin and said it’d make me look “ten years younger.” Maybe he says that to everyone? Smearing it on felt weirdly satisfying — cool and gritty at first, then drying into a tight mask while chickens wandered around pecking at nothing in particular. Rinsing off in the hot spring water was even better; you could feel every muscle relax as soon as you slid in. The air smelled faintly of minerals and smoke from somewhere nearby.

We finished up in a small village not far from Nadi. Some kids waved at us from behind a fence, giggling when I tried out “bula!” (my accent needs work). An older woman showed us how she weaves mats out of pandanus leaves — her fingers moved so fast I couldn’t keep up. We sat for tea and talked about rugby (apparently everyone here has an opinion), and for a moment it felt like time slowed down completely. On the drive back, my skin still felt soft from the mud pool and my head was full of orchids and laughter. It’s funny what sticks with you.
