The Experience

You arrive at Jinka airport and meet Minalu or another local guide who has spent years in these communities. The first drive runs 130 kilometers south to Turmi, and on the way you stop at a tribal market—Keyafer on Thursday, Alduba on Tuesday, Dimeka on Saturday, or Turmi on Monday—depending on the day you travel. If it's not a market day, the route diverts to a Banna village instead. You stay two nights in Turmi, which gives you time to visit Hamer villages and attend ceremonies if they're happening, or to return to the markets when they open.

The second day takes you 65 kilometers west to meet the Kara tribe, who live on the Omo River's shore and are known for their intricate body and facial paintings. A Kara family invites you into their home to watch and participate in a traditional coffee ceremony—not a performance, but the daily ritual of the household. You return to Turmi for lunch and spend the afternoon at another market or ceremony. On day three, you drive an hour to Omorate and cross the Omo River in a dugout canoe to reach Dassanech villages on the far bank, then return to Turmi for lunch. The afternoon includes a tribal market visit or, if available, the Hamar Bull Jumping Ceremony (an optional add-on). You also visit Jinka's ethnography museum before heading out again.

Day four takes you through Mago National Park—a 50-kilometer drive—to meet the Mursi tribe, famous for the lip plates worn by women and their extensive body scarification. After lunch back in Jinka, you drive 140 kilometers on asphalt road to Konso, a UNESCO World Heritage site built on a hilltop with terraced fields and stone walls. You visit the Konso museum and the chief's compound, where ancestral graves are marked with Waka (carved wooden poles). On day five, you drive two hours to Arba Minch, have lunch, then spend an hour driving to Dorze village to see the community's distinctive elephant-shaped houses, watch weaving, and learn how they prepare Kocho from the false banana plant called Ensset. The final morning includes a boat trip on Lake Chamo to see crocodiles and hippos before you fly back to Addis Ababa.
