The experience

The tour begins in Jinka with the Mursi, known for their lip plates and scarification, followed by a visit to the ethnographic museum that contextualizes the region's 16 indigenous tribes. You'll then spend two nights in Turmi as a base, crossing the Omo River to meet the semi-nomadic Nyangatom and visiting Korcho, a Kara village where locals practice striking body painting with chalk and natural pigments. Depending on when you travel, you may encounter the Hamar bull-jumping ceremony. A rare coming-of-age ritual that happens without advance notice.

The route takes you through markets that gather three or more tribes at once: Key Afer on Thursdays, Alduba on Tuesdays, and Dimeka on Saturdays and Tuesdays. These are working marketplaces where locals trade, socialize, and sit under shaded café areas, not performances staged for visitors. From Turmi, you'll drive to Omorate and cross the Omo River by boat to reach the Dassanech, who live along Lake Turkana's northern shore in one of Africa's harshest environments. You'll then visit the Arbore, a small pastoral community known for their black headscarves and beadwork, before moving to Konso, a highland town recognized by UNESCO for its walled settlements and centuries-old terraced agriculture.

On day five, you explore a Konso village with its distinctive wooden grave markers called waka, then drive into the highlands to visit the Dorze people, famous for their tall beehive-shaped bamboo houses and cotton weaving. The journey concludes with a morning boat trip on Lake Chamo, where you'll see one of Africa's highest concentrations of Nile crocodiles, along with hippos, pelicans, and other birdlife. An English-speaking guide accompanies you throughout, and hotel pickup is included from your accommodation.
