The experience
The tour starts with airport pickup in Jinka and moves through the valley's tribal territories over four days. Day one takes you to the Mursi villages where women wear ornamental clay disks in their lips as symbols of adulthood, then a two-hour hike through Ari settlements where you may encounter potters, blacksmiths and women making injera from maize or sorghum. Day two crosses the Omo River by bridge to the Nyangatom tribe, then continues to the Karo villages along the river's shore before reaching Turmi to visit the Hamer and Banna communities. The third day involves a boat crossing of the Omo River at Omorate using a traditional fig-tree vessel to reach the Dasanech, a pastoral people living where the river delta meets Lake Turkana. If timing aligns, you may attend a Hamer bull-jumping ceremony (performed every three days as a rite of passage). The final morning includes the Jinka Museum, which displays artifacts, clothing, weapons and body decorations organized by tribe, before the drive to the airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa.
An air-conditioned vehicle, English-speaking guide, three nights of hotel accommodation, all entrance fees and Mago National Park access are included. The guide provides context on each tribe's pastoralist and agricultural practices, their settlement patterns and the material culture on display in the museum. Hotel pickups eliminate the need to arrange transport from your accommodation in Jinka.

Top questions
What do the Mursi women's lip ornaments actually look like and how are they worn?
Mursi women wear ornamental clay disks called debhinya in their bottom lips as symbols of beauty and adulthood. The lip is cut during early teenage years and kept open with the clay disk until it heals, creating a distinctive appearance that marks their cultural identity.
Will I get to see a Hamer bull-jumping ceremony on this tour?
Bull-jumping ceremonies are performed by the Hamer tribe every three days as a rite of passage for young men. The tour includes a visit to Turmi on day three, and if the timing aligns with a ceremony, you may attend. However, the ceremony schedule is not guaranteed for every departure.
How do we cross the Omo River to reach the Dasanech tribe?
At Omorate on day three, you cross the Omo River in a traditional boat made from fig tree wood to visit the Dasanech communities on the other side. The Dasanech live at the delta where the river enters Lake Turkana and practice pastoral and agricultural livelihoods.
What is included in the accommodation for the four days?
Three nights of hotel accommodation in Jinka and Turmi are included in the tour price. Hotel pickup on arrival and drop-off before your return flight are also part of the service.
What does the Jinka Museum display?
The Jinka Museum houses artifacts organized by tribe, including cow-skin clothing and skirts, baskets, weapons, utensils, body decorations, musical instruments and games from the Karo, Bodi, Mursi, Banna and Hamer peoples. The museum helps visitors compare and contrast the material culture and traditions of each group.
