The experience
The tour runs five days out of Jinka, moving between Turmi as a base for the first three nights and returning to Jinka for the final night. Each day centers on a specific tribe: you drive to the Dassanech along the Omo River near the Kenya border, then to the Karo known for their body paintings on the river's east bank, then to the Arbore during the return journey to Jinka, and finally to the Mursi in Mago National Park before flying back to Addis Ababa. A local guide travels with you throughout, speaking English, and an air-conditioned minivan handles all transport between villages and across the valley's remote roads.
Accommodation follows the itinerary: three nights at Emerald Lodge in Turmi, one night at Nasa Hotel in Jinka. The tour includes all transport by minivan, hotel drop-off at the start, all entry fees and taxes, and the guide's services. Meals, drinks and any photography fees at villages are separate, as are souvenir photos if you choose to purchase them. The pace allows time to walk through villages, interact with community members and observe daily life and customs (hairstyles, beadwork, village structures) without rushing between stops.
Because ceremonies like bull-jumping festivals follow the tribes' own schedule rather than the tour calendar, attendance cannot be guaranteed even though these events do typically occur. The same applies to visits to Banna and Ari tribes: they depend on how much time remains given your arrival day and how the five days align with the broader itinerary. Markets at Key'Afer and Demekka are visited as the schedule allows.
