The experience
The day starts at the National Museum, where you stand in front of Lucy (Dinkinesh in Amharic, meaning "wonderful") a 3.5-million-year-old fossil of Australopithecus afarensis discovered in 1974 in the Afar region. The museum's four main sections hold ancient and medieval artifacts, royal regalia from emperors including Haile Selassie, and Ethiopian art arranged chronologically from traditional to contemporary works. An ethnographic collection on the third floor rounds out a journey through the country's artistic and cultural record.
From there the tour moves to Holy Trinity Cathedral, also called Kidist Selassie, completed in 1942 and built in a blend of traditional Ethiopian and European styles. The cathedral's stained-glass windows, intricate murals and grand dome frame the tombs of Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen Asfaw. You then head into Merkato, one of Africa's largest open-air markets, where vendors sell spices, textiles, coffee beans, traditional crafts and fresh produce across maze-like alleys divided into sections. The market's lively haggling and street food reflect local life directly. This is where thousands of small businesses and artisans operate daily, not a tourist version of one.
Mount Entoto offers panoramic views of the city before the tour reaches the historic Piazza district, where you experience local life in one of Addis Ababa's oldest neighborhoods. The day concludes with Ethiopian coffee in a traditional café, a moment to absorb the pace and rhythm of the capital before heading back.
