The Experience

You meet Dr Anthony Medhurst at Canterbury West railway station at 08:30, timed to the 54-minute direct train from London St Pancras. From there, a minibus carries you through the Kent countryside to a series of stops that build a picture of the region's history: St Augustine's Abbey, where the Canterbury Gospels (used at King Charles III's coronation) were preserved; the villages of Wickhambreaux, Ickham and Wingham, each with medieval churches and period cottages; and a vantage point on the White Cliffs where WWII gun emplacements once guarded the Channel, with views across to Dover Castle and France on clear days.

The route then loops back through the Kent Downs toward Canterbury itself, passing Barham with its newly planted vineyards and the stately home of Bourne Park, where Mozart visited in 1865. Before entering the city, you choose lunch: either at the country house with its walled garden and farm-to-table menu, or at a traditional pub dating to 1370. Your guide then leads a walking tour of Canterbury's centre, stopping at St Margaret's Street to explain the Roman theatre buried beneath your feet, the Cathedral's Norman origins from AD597, the murder of Thomas Becket and the subsequent pilgrimage trade, the Westgate Tower and its medieval gardens, and the Old Weavers' House on the riverside. The tour ends with the option to attend Evensong at the Cathedral at 17:30 (except Thursdays), a 40-minute sung service featuring the cathedral's boys or girls choir and lay clerks.

The minibus is air-conditioned and equipped with comfortable headsets that work with hearing devices. Water is provided throughout. Dr Medhurst's commentary draws on his local upbringing and his Cambridge training, moving between Roman settlement, Anglo-Saxon conversion, medieval pilgrimage, the Reformation, and the city's literary connections to Geoffrey Chaucer and Christopher Marlowe. The tour runs 8 to 10 hours depending on season and choices made. Autumn to spring departures can also start at 13:00 instead of 08:30, and pickups are available from Dover cruise terminal, Folkestone railway station, or nearby hotels if you are already in the region.

Operated by Kent and Country Tours

Is this one for you?The eight to ten hour commitment means you leave London early and return in the evening, so this works best if your day is clear of other plans. If you want to fit Canterbury into a shorter window, the autumn to spring 13:00 departure shortens the experience but keeps the main stops and the Cathedral walk. If you prefer to linger over lunch or add the wine tasting, plan for the full duration and a later return to London.

Top questions

Can I start this tour from somewhere other than Canterbury West station?

Yes. The tour departs from Canterbury West at 08:30 to meet the London train, but you can also join from Dover cruise ship terminal, Folkestone Central railway station, or nearby hotels in the Canterbury area, covering the same locations and route.

What is St Augustine's Abbey and why does it matter to this tour?

St Augustine's Abbey was founded in AD597 when Augustine arrived to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. It served as a monastery and missionary school where classical knowledge flourished. Among its surviving manuscripts is the Canterbury Gospels, used at King Charles III's coronation. The abbey is one of Canterbury's two UNESCO World Heritage landmarks.

What happens at the White Cliffs stop?

You visit a vantage point on the White Cliffs marked by WWII gun emplacements built to protect the Channel from German shipping. From here you see Dover Castle, the harbour, the English Channel, and on clear days, the French coastline. Your guide explains the history of Dover from Roman times through the Second World War.

Do I have to attend Evensong at the Cathedral?

Evensong is optional. The service runs at 17:30 to 18:10 (except Thursdays) and lasts 40 minutes, featuring the cathedral's boys or girls choir singing alongside lay clerks. You can choose to attend or conclude the tour after the walking tour of the city centre.

What are the lunch options and how do they work?

You choose between two venues: a historic country house from 1638 with a walled garden and a farm-to-table menu using produce from its own gardens and nearby farms, or a traditional English pub in Canterbury dating to 1370. Both are included in the tour. Your guide will discuss options before you arrive.

Is there a wine tasting included in this tour?

A wine tasting is available as an optional add-on at a highly acclaimed venue with views over Canterbury Cathedral. A Master of Wine has selected a range of local and international products, and sommelier-trained staff guide you through a tasting of up to 16 wines.
